INSTRUMENTATION ENGINEERING

Department of Instrumentation Engineering

Instrumentation engineering is the branch of engineering that specialises on the principle and operation of measuring instruments that are used in fields of design, configuration of automated systems in electrical, pneumatic domains, etc.Nature of work of an instrumentation engineer ranges from designing, developing, installing, managing equipments that are used to monitor and control machinery. Instruments at home and elsewhere is only because of the science of instrumentation.
The required tasks are very domain dependent; instrumentation engineers typically work for industries with automated process with the goal of improving the productivity, reliability, safety, optimisation and stability. Instrumentation engineers are commonly responsible for integrating the sensors with the recorders, transmitters, displays or control systems. They may design or specify installation, wiring and signal conditioning. They may be responsible for calibration, testing and maintenance of the system.

    INDUSTRIAL INSTRUMENTATION LAB

The purpose of this laboratory is to reinforce and enhance students’ understanding of the fundamentals of Electronics Engineering as well as the Instrumentation Engineering. The experiments here are designed to demonstrate the applications of the Instrumentation & Electronics principles and to provide a more intuitive and physical understanding of the theory. The main objective is to introduce a variety of classical experimental and diagnostic techniques, and the principles behind these techniques. This laboratory exercise also provides practice in making engineering judgments, estimates and assessing the reliability of the measurements, skills which are very important in all engineering disciplines.

The main lab courses conducted at Industrial Instrumentation lab are:

    • Basic Instrumentation Lab
    • Transducers and Measurements Lab
    • Analog/Digital Circuits Lab
    • Industrial Electronics Lab
    • Microcontroller Lab
    • Instrumentation Lab

Lab resources: Digital Storage Oscilloscopes, Function generators, Dead Weight Tester, Temperature baths, Thermometers/RTD/Thermocouple Sensor setups, Stroboscopes, Pressure/Level/Flow Sensor setups etc..

Lab in charge: Aswathi Anne Paulose

    PROCESS CONTROL LAB

The Department has a well equipped Process control Laboratory. Necessary Hardware and software like LabVIEW are available for measurement, simulation, calibration, characterization and synthesis of the Process control Systems.

The experiments conducted in this laboratory impart training and practical testing of the equipments which offer students the right kind of exposure and provide them ample opportunity to apply their knowledge in practical scenarios.

In this lab the students will be able to design, implement and tune controllers for different processes, to calibrate SMART devices, to simulate processes using software techniques and also to design and implement various PLC applications.

As this lab provides an industrial environment extreme care is taken by faculties to direct the students in each and every step.

The main lab courses conducted at this lab are:

    •  Process Control Lab
    •  Advanced Process Control Lab
    •  Calibration & Simulation Lab

Lab resources: Programmable Logic Controllers, Flow/Level/Temperature/Pressure process stations with Data acquisition modules and allied computer systems, SMART calibrator & transmitters, Control Valves etc……

    Lab in charge: Shinto Sebastian

    ANALYTICAL AND BIOMEDICAL LAB

Analytical instruments are a large class of instruments used for analytical applications in chemical, pharmaceutical, clinical, food-processing laboratories and oil refineries. The instruments help in analysing materials and establishing the composition.
Biomedical Instrumentation is an emerging area in medical science. It involves measurement of biological signals like ECG, EMG, or any electrical signals generated in the human body. Biomedical Instrumentation helps physicians to diagnose the problem and provide treatment. The exposure to biomedical /analytical instruments will be a great help to the students to get a job in this area.
In this lab, the students will be able to measure biological signals, to analyze biological as well as chemicalsamples and to design a medical/analytical instrument with the concepts of electronics and measurement techniques.

Lab resources: ECG Machines, Trainer setups for EEG, EMG, ECG telemetry, respiration rate, Nebulizers, Bed side monitor, pH meters, Conductivity meter, Spectrophotometer, colorimeter, Digital BP apparatus, Glucometer etc….
Lab in charge: Aswati Anne Paulose.
